NFC business cards in Malaysia: how they work and how to choose one
What an NFC business card is, whether it works on iPhone and Android, how it compares with QR codes and paper cards, and what to check before you buy one for yourself or your team.
What is an NFC business card?
An NFC business card is a card with a small NFC chip inside that stores a link to your online profile. When someone holds their phone near the card, the phone reads the link and opens your profile in the browser, where they can call you, message you on WhatsApp or save your details. No app is needed on their side.
NFC stands for near-field communication, the same short-range radio used for contactless payment. The chip has no battery: the phone powers it during the tap, which only works at a distance of a few centimetres.
How does tapping a card open a profile?
- The chip holds a record, usually a web address (URL) such as your profile page.
- The phone's NFC reader powers the chip and reads that record when they are close together.
- The phone shows a notification or opens the link in the browser.
- The page loads from the internet, so it can show your latest details even if the card was written months ago.
Some cards store a contact file (vCard) on the chip instead of a link. That skips the web page, but it has two costs: the details are fixed until someone rewrites the chip, and iPhones cannot read it.
Do NFC business cards work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, when the card stores a web link. iPhone XS and later read NFC tags in the background whenever the screen is on. iPhone 7, 8 and X need the NFC Tag Reader in Control Centre. Most NFC-enabled Android phones open the link when NFC is switched on and the screen is unlocked.
A few things can stop a tap from working: NFC switched off on some Android phones, the camera or Apple Pay in use on an iPhone, or a thick phone case. That's why a good digital business card also has a QR code and a shareable link as backups.
Avantix Card today: your QR code and link open your live card page. NFC cards written with the app's iPhone option open a link that shares your contact, not the full card page. With Link card mode in the next app update, a tap opens your live card page and stays current when you edit your profile.

NFC card vs QR code vs paper card
| Paper card | QR code | NFC card (link) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How they get your details | Type them in by hand | Point the camera | Tap the phone |
| Works without an app | — | Yes | Yes |
| Updates after you hand it out | No, reprint | Yes, if it links to a live page | Yes, if it links to a live page |
| Works from a screen or slide | No | Yes | No |
| Tells you it was used | No | If the page counts views | If the page counts taps |
| Can collect the visitor's details | No | If the page has a form | If the page has a form |
In practice most teams use both: the NFC card for face-to-face meetings, and the QR code for booths, slides and printed material.

How much do NFC business cards cost in Malaysia?
There are two parts: the physical card and the software behind the profile page. Some sellers charge for the card only, others add a monthly subscription for the profile page. As examples seen in September 2026, printed PVC NFC cards were listed from around RM56 each and metal NFC cards at around RM150 to RM185 each by Malaysian printers (Gogoprint, Imagemagic). Prices change often and depend on quantity and finish, so check with the seller.
Avantix Card starts from RM60, a one-time payment. Avantix supplies the physical NFC card, which works with your live card page, QR code and the Avantix Card app with a Leads list. It is for individuals and teams. Message us on WhatsApp for the exact price for your order.
How to set up NFC business cards for yourself or a team
- Choose a digital business card service that gives each person a live profile page, a QR code and a way to collect leads.
- Fill in each person's profile: photo, job title, WhatsApp number, company details and links.
- Write each person's card to an NFC card using a link (not only a contact file), and test it on both an iPhone and an Android phone.
- Know where your QR code and link are, for times when a tap doesn't work.
- Decide who follows up the leads, and how quickly.
Frequently asked questions
Do NFC business cards work on iPhone?
Yes, if the card holds a web link. iPhone XS and later read NFC tags in the background whenever the screen is on, and show a notification that opens the link. iPhone 7, 8 and X need the NFC Tag Reader in Control Centre. iPhones do not read contact (vCard) records from NFC tags, so a card that only holds a contact file works on Android but not on iPhone.
Does the person receiving my card need an app?
No. A link-based NFC card opens your profile in the phone browser. Apps are only needed by the card owner, to edit the profile and write the card.
Do I need internet to tap an NFC card?
The tap itself needs no internet: the phone powers the chip and reads the link. The profile page behind the link loads when the phone is online.
Which NFC chip should a business card use?
Any standard NDEF tag works for a link, for example NTAG213 or larger. A link needs very little memory; storing a full contact card on the chip needs more.
How much does an NFC business card cost in Malaysia?
It depends on the card and the service behind it. Printed PVC NFC cards were listed from around RM56 and metal cards from around RM150 to RM185 by Malaysian printers in September 2026, and some services add a monthly fee. Avantix Card starts from RM60, a one-time payment, and Avantix supplies the physical NFC card.
